Accessing Electronic Serials
This list includes serials that can be accessed electronically and provides
direct access to these serials. Currently, the Library provides access
to serials either directly from the publisher or mediated through the
FirstSearch or IAC search systems. To access the serials, click on the
title in the list and follow the directions below.
NOTE: It is beyond the scope of this document to teach on-line searching.
For more information on that subject, check the documents contained
in the Online Instruction Section of the Library's Web Site.
DIRECT SERIALS
ACCESS:
When you click on a serial accessed directly from the publisher and
are using one of the computers in the Library (NOT including the LRC),
you will be linked directly to the publisher's web site. If you are
using any other computer, you will connect through the Library's proxy
server and you will have to enter your username and password. The username
is your name as it appears on your ID card (inluding all initials and
punctuation). Your password is the sixteen-digit number in the bottom
left corner of you ID card (not the Lib#).
TO FIND ARTICLES:
If a serial is accessed directly from the publisher, there is no standardized
search engine. In general, the publisher provides access on an issue-by-issue
basis, which means that you will first click on a link for a specific
issue and then browse the table of contents for the article you're looking
for. Most electronic serials require special software to view the full-text
article. You must make sure this software is loaded on your computer
before you can view the contents of the article.
Some publishers also provide a search engine. Most of these search
engines search the entire record for the words that you enter (not just
the title or subject headings) so care must be used to select meaningful
terms to search for.
