Search Tips

This tutorial was originally created by the University of Washington's HealthLinks project. It has been abridged by librarians at Downstate Medical Center to reflect our specific resources.

Fields There are two ways of finding the full-text of instruments in CINAHL.

Method 1

CINAHL identifies journal articles that contain partial or complete questionnaires or scales within them by including the label "Questionnaire/Scale" in the Publication Type field within the record.

To limit your search results to journal articles that contain partial or complete copies of questionnaires or scales, enter the most unique word or phrase in the name of the questionnaire or scale in the search box and select Questionnaire/Scale from the Publication Type options in the Refine Search section of the page (below the search boxes). Click Search.

Example: type in rosenberg self esteem in the search box, then select Questionnaire/Scale as the Publication Type See attached image

Note that more than one instrument may have been used in an article so that there is no guarantee that the partial or complete questionnaire/scale that is included in the article matches the one you are looking for.

Obtaining Full Text

To view the full text of an article, check the Serials List for online availability or the Catalog for print availability.

Method 2

CINAHL Plus also creates its own records of detailed descriptions of over 250 research instruments including information on how to obtain them, and sometimes the full-text of the instrument. CINAHL Plus identifies these records by including the label "Research Instrument" in the Publication Type field.

To see if an instrument is included in this set of records, enter the most unique word or phrase in the name of the instrument in the Search Box and select Research Instrument from the Publication Type options in the Refine Search section of the page (below the search boxes) to find research instrument descriptions including instructions on how to obtain a copy of the instrument and, possibly, the full text of the instrument. Click Search.

Example: type in rosenberg self esteem in the search box then select Research Instrument as the Publication Type

The default display of records will appear. You will need to change the display of the results in order to view the complete record and, often, the text of the test (or a link to a pdf image of the it) in the Full Text field .
