Online Clinical Information Resources

The Medical Research Library of Brooklyn has, over the last year, offered access to online clinical resources.  Our decision to offer these web-based resources was based on two factors that occurred in 2000.  The first was the resounding success of MD Consult which began as a partnership among the College of Medicine, the Students Technology Fee Committee, and the Library.  This resource proved to be very much in demand by students and faculty, including residents.  The second factor was the library's teaching input into the Evidence-Based curriculum of the College of Medicine and the residency programs.  This effort received national attention through the web-based tutorials freely offered on our web page.  More importantly, however, this allowed the library to begin defining EBM web-based resources that include the Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews, Best Evidence, and Harrison's online.  The library has made available UpToDate for testing and is still offering eMedicine to its users for evaluation.  These resources are meant to provide students, faculty and clinicians with the most accurate clinical information in a timely manner for efficient patient care.  All users are encouraged to try these resources and give the library some feedback regarding their usability, efficiency, and accuracy.  It is our belief that the Downstate community will self-select those clinical information resources which best serve its mission.  It is the mission of the library both to provide these resources and deliver the information to the point of need.  This may be done via a network computer, home computer or wireless mode.  Your involvement and support will help us to achieve these goals.  RW, MH

New Clinical Information Paging Service

In its continuting effort to deliver information where, when and ini what format it is needed, the Library will introduce a pilot service that would allow clinicians to call a librarian to request clinical information e.g. a literature search or reference to a clinical information resources which we offer and the librarian would fill the request via e-mail.  Call x7405.  Look for details.  RW

PC Training Rooms

This semester, two new training rooms will become available.  This will support the educational goals of the library and will meet the growing demands for teaching spaces.  One room is wired in the traditional manner, while the other will be wireless in its configuration.  Both will provide full network access.  Look for details.  RW

Library Educational Services

The library continues to provide many learning experiences for the Downstate community.  The Education Services Committee, led by its Chair, Dr Andrea Markinson, working with a team of dedicated librarians, coordinates and teaches classes for students, faculty and the campus community at large.  These classes range from the clinically oriented Medline and PubMed to Searching the World Wide Web and applications such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.  The library offers over 20 classes for the campus community.  Each month a list is published in the bulletin and on the web page.  Last year 700 participants took advantage of these classes with a 6+ on a 7 point scale (7 being the highest rating).  The library, through this committee, has made significant inroads into the curriculum of the Colleges and education of the Residents.  These classes are specifically aimed at equipping the clinical practitioners with the needed skills for using Evidence-Based Health Resources.  STAFF

New FirstSearch Databases

SUNYConnect - a multi-year, university-wide project creating a virtual library to meet the needs of SUNY's students and faculty - has arranged for an additional 37 databases through the FirstSearch suite of databases.  Of particular interest to health professionals are CINAHL (for nursing and allied health information) and PsycFIRST (for psychosocial and mental health information).  Nurse educators and others working to instruct the public will find Education Abstracts useful.  For your more general needs, Books in Print, ECO and WilsonSelectPlus each search journals in a variety of subjects.  For basic information, try WorldBook, the online version of the encyclopedia.  The ever popular WorldCat has been enhanced for greater functionality.  CS

Reserves and copyright

In order to maintain copyright compliance, old electronic reserve materials will be removed from the Library's web site.  If you have placed materials on reserve prior to August 1, 2001, those materials will be removed from the library's web site on November 1, 2001.  If you wish to have materials remain available, you must contact Juannetta LeGree at Access Services, x7401, before that date.  In the case of materials from journals, a new letter seeking copyright clearance must be submitted along with your request.  CS

1.  I.D. Cards MUST be visibly worn at all times
