LIBRARY EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES
By Mary Doherty

The Educational Services librarians have been working on new  initiatives that will gear library instruction to curricular needs. On September 8th, Mary Doherty participated in  the Community Assessment course in the College of Nursing. Students were made aware of print and electronic resources available in the library that would be useful  in their assignments. Information was also given on how to utilize them effectively.

The instructor had consulted in advance with the    librarians to determine how best to meet the library instructional needs of her students. This customized effort was arranged at a time  which the instructor and library staff felt would be most beneficial.  Librarian consultation and customized instruction can meet the specific needs of the course, making it more useful and meaningful to the students. In this case, the students needed to access local statistical data by community district. The class was therefore centered on finding census data and reviewing sources covering community district and neighborhood information in Brooklyn.

This information was given early in the course so that the students would be familiar with the necessary library resources before they began their assignment, and library staff would be made aware of their needs. We hope that more faculty will take advantage of customized  instruction offered by the Educational Services librarians.

NEW BOOKS SHELVES
By Valerie Morris-James

After a short hiatus, the library is proud to re-introduce the New Books shelf which will display a collection of about one hundred new books weekly.

The labelled New Books area can be found on the first range of shelves behind  Library Information Kiosk #1.  Just look for the books with the dots on them.  These are available for browsing and borrowing.  Patrons will see a new collection each week as the previous set of books will be shelved on the lower level with the rest of our monographs.

Our New Books shelf is one more service provided to enhance information access for our patrons.

JOURNALS UPDATE FOR  1999
By Mohamed Hussain

In recent years the library has been assessing its journal collection in terms of use and cost.  Economic realities have made it necessary  for us to ensure that cost is justified by use.  Reports of usage are compiled and a list of titles are proposed for deaccessioning to the faculty and the Library Committee of the campus.  The feedback from these bodies helps us to determine what is finally deaccessioned.  In like manner, Interlibrary Loan statistics and internal, monthly, non- circulating journal counts are considered in the decision process. InterLibrary Loan statistics are considered for accessioning.  For 1999, 92 titles are to be deaccessioned while 14 new titles will be added.
