 Library Services: At Your Conveniene
By Julie Semkow

We like to make it as easy as possible for our users to communicate their needs to us, particularly during off  hours when full library staffing is not available. We're also very interested in utilizing newer technologies to provide 24 hour access via our Web page

You can:

  • A New Information Resource: Wiley Interscience
    By Christopher Stewart

The Library has added a new information resource to its collection: Wiley Interscience.  Through this service, the Library has added 30 new electronic full-text journals to its collection (accessed from the Journals pull-down menu at the Library's web site).  Wiley Interscience provides more than just journals however; it is also a database with the ability to search all scientific journals published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

You can access journals in one of two ways.  The Journal Finder provides access to journals by the title of the journal.  You can look at all journals through an alphabetical listing or you can look at journals grouped together by subject.  Subjects include: Business, Finance & Management; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth Science;    Education; Engineering; Law; Life and Medical Sciences; Mathematics and Statistics; Physics; and Psychology (most of the journals the Library subscribes to are drawn from Life and Medical Sciences).

Once you've clicked on a title, you can access the table of contents of all journals published by Wiley going back to 1996.  You can access abstracts for journals, but only for the last 12 months on journals that the Library does not subscribe to.  You can also access the full-text of articles from journals to which the Library subscribes as long as you enter the Library-provided User ID and password.

You can also search the Wiley Interscience system.  "Search" is an option from the system's main menu.  You can perform a simple search: search on keyword only (the system searches for your terms in the entire record).  An advanced search allows you to search by keyword as well as by article title, author, author affiliation, words in the abstract, and funding agency.  You can limit your search by age of article (last month, last two months, last six months, etc.) or by publication date.  You can also limit your search to a journal subject area as described above.  While you will

    Library Consultation Service
    By Mary Doherty

We would like the Downstate community to be aware that experienced
librarians are available, by appointment, to provide consultations
about the library's resources, including literature searching
(Medline and the many other databases we offer), printed library
materials, use of the Internet, and classes in library skills and
resources taught cooperatively with SUNY- HSCB instructors in their
    courses.

Please call Reference voice mail (x7405) and ask for further
information. We encourage faculty, staff and students to take
advantage of this service in order to make optimal use of all the
information riches the library offers. We look forward to hearing from
    you.

    Online Tip:
"OnHealth-Your Personal Guide to Health Information" is a useful patient information site which provides a wide variety of information from birth control to hair loss and healthy eating habits. To surf this internet site aim your browser at http://www.onhealth.com.

    FYI:
Remote Access to the Library's Web Page

Since its inception in December, the Library's new web page has provided a wealth of information for its users.  Unfortunately, some browsers have had difficulty interpreting the programming for the pull-down menus that the web site uses.  In response to its clientele's needs, the Library has sought to resolve this issue by including a link to text-based versions of these menus that any browser will allow a user to click on to make use of the Library's rich resources.  Just one more way that the Library is striving to meet the needs of its users.
