LIBRARY SURVEY (LibQUAL +)

The library is preparing to launch a campus- wide survey which will ‘measure library service quality and identify best practices through the Association of Research Libraries LibQUAL+ program.’

The survey will be conducted via LotusNotes mail.  We encourage you to participate in this venture so that we may more effectively serve your needs as we cater to the present and plan for the future.

The survey is entirely online and participation is voluntary.  The survey will be launched on
March 31 and will run for three weeks.  Your participation will take about 10 minutes of your time.

REFERENCE CHAT ROOM

Would you like to”chat” with a librarian?  The library is currently piloting a test of a chat program called ‘Liveperson’.  Between the hours of nine and five on weekdays, when there is no staff present at the Reference Desk, a librarian will be available to answer your questions via the chat room.  A workstation is located in the vicinity of the Reference Desk for this purpose.  All it requires is that the user click on a button to initiate the chat.  A librarian will respond and the queries and answers are keyed into the text box.  The entire transaction is displayed on the screen and the user may even request a transcript emailed to them.

Presently this pilot service is only available in the library.  Eventually, we expect to expand the service to the library web page where it will be available to both local and remote users during specific times.

Come on in and help us test the service.  Share your thoughts about it with us.

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES

We are constantly trying new ways to promote the resources of the library.  This is especially so with the electronic journals. On the tagged shelves which hold the hard copy of the currently received journals, users will now find a red dot near to the name of the journal.   This red dot indicates the availability of the journal electronically via the Serials List on the library’s web page.  Also, journals which are no longer received in hard copy, but are still available electronically will be so indicated by a book dummy bearing the red dot.  The dummy will be shelved next to the last bound volume of the journal.

In the case of books, shelf signs will indicate that the book is available online either directly or via StatRef.  This idea was the brainchild of Juannetta LeGree, Head of Access Services.

SERVICE ADJUSTMENT

Articles requested through Inter-Library Loan service must now be picked up at the Access Services Desk.  At his time, books which were requested will continue to be distributed from the Inter-Library Loan office.

This is in keeping with the goal of creating a single service delivery point for materials whether they are books or serials checked out from our collection or if they are materials procured from other libraries.

You will also notice a different ILL request form which now gives you the option, when possible, to have your article delivered to your desktop in .pdf format .  Mohamed Hussain

 THE LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER

The printed catalog of slide and  video resources  available in the LRC will cease to exist. This is a part of the library’s goal to bring current information to the user’s desktop.  A more efficient way of determining what the LRC has in its collection of videocassettes and other media formats is described below:

*Click on the CATALOG on the library’s  web page.
* Select ANY WORD OR WORDS
* In the text box type the following:
    diabetes and video?

This will retrieve all records which have the words ‘diabetes’ and ‘videotapes or videocasettes’.  The list which reflects the most current information will provide you with information on all videos dealing with diabetes.
Similarly a search for ‘anatomy and slide?’ will provide a list material in slide format dealing with anatomy.
The question mark is the truncation symbol that ensures retrieval of records containing either videotape or videocassette

A REMINDER

Classes for PubMed will be offered the 4th Tuesday of every month at 2 pm in the Library. Classes for CINAHL and PsycINFO can also be arranged.
Contact Mary Doherty at extension 7453 for more information.

…And another

The photocopy service has been revised in terms of cost.  All requests are $5.00 per article.  This will cover the first 20 pages.  All pages thereafter will cost and additional $.20 per page. This services will satisfy the needs of those users who would prefer not to do their own pulling and photocopying of materials held by this library. Forms regarding this revised service may be obtained from the Access Services Desk.

Users are encouraged to check the Serials List on the web page for electronic access to titles.  In some cases users may print out articles from their computers at home or in the office.
