LOOK MA!!!  NO WIRES!!!

Wireless Access in the Library

In a joint project with the Student Activity Fee Committee, Medical Research Library, and the Scientific Computing Center, wireless hubs have been installed through throughout the three floors of the Library.  A total of 9 transceivers have been strategically placed throughout the second and first floors, and the lower level of the Library.  It is now possible to connect to the Internet via an 11 Mbit microwave link throughout the Library.  Any laptop computer with a wireless adapter can connect to the local area network by setting the Extended Service Set IDentifier (ESSID) to 'downstate' (all lower case).  This ID is entered in the settings menu of the network adapter, wit the TCP/IP properties set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' or DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).  PCMCIA wireless adapter cards can be purchased from most computer supply stores or over the Internet.  Any 802.11b wireless adapter card should work - we have tested cards manufactured by 3COM, Intel, and Netgear finding all worked flawlessly.  Once installed, users can access all library resources including the online catalog and databases, as well as a direct connection to e-mail and the Internet.  For further information concerning this new service, contact the library computer systems division.  MA

Wireless Laptops in the Library

The library has further enhanced its service by providing wireless laptops which may be checked out from the Access Services Desk for in-house use.  These laptops are available to all SUNY Downstate Faculty, Staff, Residents, and Students.  The loan period is two hours with no renewals and the fine is $10 per hours.  MH

New Clinical Web Resources

With its continued commitment to providing quality information to health care providers, the library has added THREE new web-based clinical resources accessible from its web page.  They are eMedicine, UpToDate, and BioCritique.

eMedicine  is  highly rated for its comprehensiveness by the Medical Internet Hall of Fame.  It is the electronic publisher of the vast eMedicine World Medical Reference which covers 62 medical specialties and is continually updated on a 24 / 7 schedule.

Close to 10,000 physicians author and edit its original content.  An exhaustive peer-review process ensures a high quality and accuracy of information provided.  Currently 30,000 hours of CME and CE credits are offered with plans to introduce more.

UpToDate provides instantaneous, evidence-based answers to the most commonly asked questions in clinical practice.  Detailed coverage is of the following specialties is included: Adult Primary Care and Internal Medicine; Cardiovascular Medicine; Endocrinology and Diabetes; Gastroenterology and Hepatology; Hematology; Infectious Diseases; Nephrology and Hypertension; Oncology; Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine;  and Rheumatology.  This resource is available only on the campus network and its fully referenced content is updated three times a year.

BioCritique may be regarded as the biomedical professional’s personal research assistant.  This forum allows the user to the enormous mass of scientific and medical articles and zero in on what is of prime interest in a particular field.  This peer-reviewed resource offers access to expert panelists on specific topics, convenient, related links and the convenience of personalized search options.

As usual, these resources are only as good as the use to which they are put.  Your use and your feedback regarding their effectiveness are both valuable and may affect future selection of resources. MH
……………………………………………

The library is also now subscribed to 136 electronic journal titles from  Lippincott Williams &Wilkins via OVID.  These titles appear in the Serials List on the library’s home page and can be identified by Journals@OVID following the titles. The journals are all available in full text but only some are available in PDF format.  This bring to 1737 the total number of electronic journals to which we provide access.  Access to those journals which are password protected may be cleared at the Reference Center, Access Services, and LRC service desks, upon presentation of a valid SUNY Downstate ID card. LIGHTING IN THE LIBRARY

The F,M and D department is addressing the problem of inadequate lighting in the library.  We anticipate that a totally new lighting system will be in place by late summer of 2002.  We wish to thank the Downstate administration for its support in this venture and the students, staff and residents for their patience. YOUR INPUT IS NEEDED

The library is seeking your input in evaluating the following resource:
www.biomedcentral.com
This web site belongs to an independent publishing house  which provides free access to peer-reviewed biomedical research which bypasses the traditional subscription-based access to scientific communication.  These articles are also available at no charge via PubMed and PubMed Central. Your evaluation of this site will determine the library’s willingness to become an institutional member.  Register your comments with Mohamed F. Hussain, Assistant Director for Resource Management x7450 or mohamed.hussain@downstate.edu
