LIBRARY BULLETIN
March 2001
Interlibrary Loan Services
by Ross Ljungquist, Head of the Interlibrary Loan Dept.
Interlibrary Loan Services, which obtains for you articles and books
not owned by Downstate, is officially open 9 - 5 Monday through Friday.
However, you may pick up your articles evenings and weekends at the
Access Services Desk. You may also leave your new ILL requests
at the Access Services Desk evenings and weekends. The staff will
start the process of ordering the articles and books. This is
part of our efforts to integrate the work of ILL and Access Services.
ILL is now using the new Web-based DOCLINE service of the National
Library of Medicine. The citations are derived from PubMed.
Requests for materials may go to Resource Libraries all over the country.
Previously, the requests were pretty much confined to the Middle Atlantic
states and New England. Requests go online from library to library
if they are not filled. Now the requests may even go to libraries
on the West Coast or in the Midwest and South.
Likewise, we are now receiving requests from all parts of the country.
This has increased our volume, but it is worthwhile because we have
the benefit of drawing on the collections of far more libraries.
DOCLINE tries 20 Resource Libraries for those articles not found in
the Northeast. Previously, the system just tried the National
Library of Medicine, and if NLM lacked the item, the request died.
Our aim is always to be a net lender, i.e. to lend more than we borrow
from other libraries. This increases our revenue which we use
for library services here for our patrons.
Of course, it is advantageous to obtain articles and books in the New
York area because we have a daily messenger service for clinical and
basic sciences materials. We also have a twice-weekly messenger
service for materials in subjects like education, psychology, and physics
from general libraries in the New York area.
In some cases we no longer have to go to other libraries for articles.
Journals published by Elsevier we can access online and print a PDF
version of the article here. The printing process is somewhat
time-consuming, but we don’t have to wait for the article to be sent,
and the print version with illustrations included is perfect.
Searching Full Text Journal Articles on PubMed
By Mary Doherty
In the library, we have received a number of questions concerning obtaining
full-text of journal articles via Medline searching via PubMed. The
answer is that there are several sources for full text on PubMed.
A.. The National Library of Medicine has begun a program called
PubMed
Central. This includes agreements with publishers to make their journals
available fulltext on PubMed. At the moment this includes 8 journals,
most in the Life Sciences. However it includes BMJ (British
Medical Journal.) After you click the author's name a screen with
an icon will appear that says " PubMed Central" or "Free
fulltext articles." This icon will allow you to click
into fulltext if you have a citation to a journal that is part of this
program.
B. PubMed can also link to journals subscribed to by the Library.
This includes links to journals that we subscribe to from various publishers
such as Elsevier. You will see an icon on the screen listing the relevant
citation. Through the Library’s proxy server, you can also access
these journals at home.
C. An interesting feature of PubMed is that you can list your references
according to "Link Out." This is available from the dropdown menu next
to the "Display" button It will list your references according
to fulltext availability. Remember that only the PubMed Central fulltext
is available from your home computer. NLM hope to keep adding journals
to this program.
D. NLM also hopes to add fulltext of books to PubMed. Right now there
is
one, "Molecular Biology of the Cell."
