A New Service is Created
By Jennifer Brown

In December of 2000, Classroom Services merged their services with those of The Alumni Learning Resource Center (LRC) to form The Learning Resource Services.  This new service is located on the basement level of The Medical Research Library and led by Ms. Jennifer Brown.

Combining these services results in better communication on resources used in the curriculum.  These resources may be available in the LRC or through Classroom Services.  The LRC supports educational programs in the curriculum through resources such as slides, videos and curriculum software. Classroom Services provides the room and audiovisual equipment. Together we will make an effort to enhance the teaching and learning environment.

One example is to promote the use of PowerPoint in the curriculum.  The Educational Services department provides PowerPoint classes and tutorials on PowerPoint are available in the LRC.  Classroom Services will schedule the room and a LCD Projector (used for computer presentations).  Overall, this service will address and coordinate Large Group, Small Group and Individual instruction.  We welcome all suggestions and comments.

Fall 2001 Scheduling
By Jennifer Brown

Yes, it’s that time of the year again.  As we approach the start of a new academic year, we ask that all Classroom Services request forms are submitted by June 29, 2001.  Please remember the convenience of scheduling space and equipment at the same time.  Media requests may be submitted separately  - at least two business days prior to the event.  It’s important that the form be filled out completely to avoid processing delays.  Make sure to list all possible ways of contact, including a pager number.

Classroom Services requests are prioritized as follows: 1) Curriculum requests for the COM, CON, CHRP and Graduate School, 2) Continuing Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education and Administrative, 3) all other meetings and conferences.  Space is scheduled based on availability, # of participants, food/beverage and media needs. There are four ways to submit request forms to classrooms: via fax at ext. 7471, HSCB mail at box 14, campus email at “Classroom Services” and over the internet at the library’s web site (http://library.downstate.edu).  Completed requests are processed and written confirmation is sent in a timely manner.  Please review your confirmation for accuracy and let us know of any changes or cancellations.

Audiovisual Equipment Requests
By Vincent Castro

Audiovisual equipment may be scheduled along with a room or easily added to your already scheduled event.  To help us accommodate all audiovisual requests, we require at least two business days notice.  If this requirement is not met, then you may be asked to pick up and return the requested equipment.

If you are requesting a LCD Projector for the first time, we ask that you schedule a compatibility test with your laptop and our projector prior to the day of your event.  On the day of your event, technical assistance will be provided fifteen minutes prior to event start time to avoid unforeseen technical problems.  We ask that you inform Classroom Services of any changes or cancellation of requested equipment.  Emergency technical assistance is available from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, Monday through Friday by calling extension 1215.

Quality Assurance Surveys
By Kandi Johnson

Quality Assurance surveys were conducted by Classroom Services to ensure that the audiovisual needs of the Faculty and Teaching staff of the Downstate community were met.  They were conducted by an Audio Visual Technician who checked that the requested AV equipment was set up and in working condition at the beginning of each scheduled activity in the Lecture Halls and Alumni Auditorium.  For activities scheduled in classrooms, a survey was sent through the HSCB mail.

Last year’s findings showed a less than 2% complaint rate by Faculty and Teaching Staff.  This year, Classroom Services will conduct random surveys of all Lecture Halls and Classrooms with requested audiovisual equipment.  Through the ongoing cooperation of the AV staff and the Downstate Community, Classroom Services will continue to provide quality services.

Computer Software Training Programs
By Angela Melton

The Alumni Learning Resource Center (LRC), is located in the basement of the library.  The LRC supports and owns software-training programs.  Tutorials are available on an introductory, intermediate and advanced level for the following software :

1. Microsoft Office 2000

A. Word
B. Excel
C. PowerPoint
D. Access

2. Microsoft Office 97

A. Word
B. Excel
C. PowerPoint
D. Access

3. Corel WordPerfect 8

4. Fundamentals of Windows 95

5. Introduction to the INTERNET and Netscape

Faculty, Staff and Students have access to these tutorials.  Faculty and Staff may borrow them for two days and Students for two hours. They can be viewed in the LRC or charged out.  As a service to the Downstate community, we will copy tutorials free of charge providing you supply us with blank CD-R discs.

What about: Off Campus and Weekend AudioVisual Services Needs
By  Howard Erskine

If your event is related to course program or campus related business then we can provide equipment to you at no rental cost.  However, some pieces of equipment require a technician to set up and operate them.  In this case, the hourly rate is $35/hr with a minimum required “call time” of four hours.

A Letter from the Director
By Richard Winant

Dear Colleagues:

Classroom Services, the one-stop service for room scheduling and AV delivery service, is beginning its third year of service to the campus.  During this period, Classroom Services room scheduling has grown from 10,000 in 1998 to 14,000 in 2001, and the total number of equipment delivered has grown from 8,000 in 1998 to 20,000 in 2001.  Even with the growth in service, the quality of service has continued.  The questionnaires that you answered and signed demonstrated a less than 2% complaint rate in 2001.

With your assistance, Classroom Services will continue to provide a quality service.  We do need your feedback via the surveys being provided to randomly selected users.  A general survey will be included in a future Library Information Bulletin.  Please take the time to complete and return these surveys.

It is our responsibility to provide you with your room scheduling and audiovisual delivery needs.  While I work with a great staff, I take a personal interest in addressing your concerns or resolving problems with our service.  I am available at ext. 7411, on ccmail under Winant, Richard, or at winant@hscbklyn.edu.
