Getting Help on the Library's Web Site
By Christopher Stewart
Feeling lost when you access the Library's web site? Take a look
at these parts of the web page for help.
The "Welcome" button provides an overview of what's available on the
Library web page.
Documents accessed from the "Help" button provide information on accessing
resources:
an overview of the web site, what's available from outside the Library,
and how to find information across resources (particularly consumer
health information).
The "Site Guide" button provides assistance in locating particular
resources. The Site Map provides an "outline" of where various
resources fit into the organizational structure. The Index provides
an alphabetical listing of all resources available from the Library
Web Site including individual databases and electronic journals.
Assistance with individual resources is available from the "Online
Instruction" button. Currently, there are web-based tutorials
for using OVID Medline, PubMed, and the Library's online catalog.
There are also one-page "Quick Tips" for using many resources
and more on the way. We are planning to create a one-page description
of each vendor (Encyclopaedia Britannica, FirstSearch, Harrison's Online,
InfoTrac, Internet Grateful Med, Lexis-Nexis, Merck, MDConsult, OVID,
PubMed, Wiley). The information on these pages will include:
a description of the resource, when to use a particular resource, access
issues, links to vendor-created documentation, links to whatever online
instruction other institutions have created, and whatever other documentation
is needed for the members of our institution. The button, "Journals
List"
contains a document on how to access electronic journals.
It is our hope that the current documentation and the planned additions
will meet the needs of our users. We make every effort to alert
our users to new services and documentation through our "What's New"
button on the web site and are happy to accept suggestions through the
forms behind the "Contact Us" button.
Tips! Downstate events?
On any given day, a number of events could be taking place at SUNY Downstate.
How do you find out what those events are? Unfortunately, there's no
centralized source for upcoming events. Individuals organizing special
events tend either to post flyers on the bulletin boards throughout
the campus, or send announcements through campus mail or email and email
bulletin boards. Events scheduled by \Classroom Services appear on monitors
throughout the campus. There is also a calendar of events on the SUNY
Downstate webpage: http://www.hscbklyn.edu/SUNY/UA/Happenings.html
