LIBRARY BULLETIN

December 2001

Holiday Message from the Director

As an Academic Health Science Center, Downstate serves the community with many resources, among them, health care, education, and research.  The most valuable resource however is people who make these things possible.  The medical library does its part in providing for the informational components of these services as is an integral part of the institution’s mission.  The library’s faculty and staff are proud to be part of the contributions made by the institution to the community.  We join in wishing you and yours the safest and happiest of holidays. RW

You were promised a continuation of a review of  library resources available via the web page.  Among the many resources are the tutorials available which range from those on Medline  to those such as Lexis-Nexis , Wiley InterScience, Dialog@CARL and Elsevier ScienceDirect, and  FirstSearch.  These tutorials are valuable both as an introduction and refresher.  Be sure, also, to try the new clinical resources of Emedicine and UpToDate. Emedicine offers peer-reviewed review articles on new clinical information.  Emedicine also offers PDA downloadable books and parts of books.  UpToDate offers fully searchable information including guidelines from major societies and topic reviews by expert authors based on experience and clinical evidence. MH

Email Reference

The Reference unit has instituted an email account that can bring the librarian to your home or office.  The library’s web page, library.downstate.edu, allows you to click into a reference email account and communicate with a reference librarian who will answer questions about searching the databases, or make recommendations about resources to use for your query.  We check the account daily on weekdays and will respond within 24 hrs.  Weekend and holiday queries are dealt with on the next business day.  Mediated Medline searches by a librarian remain a fee-based service.  Call x7405 if you have any questions. MD

In an effort to use scarce dollars to meet the information needs of the community, the library has decided to de-accession the following titles.  Monies saved by this move will mean money for more widely used resources.  The journals below show very low or no usage and we cannot justify continued expenditure.  Materials needed from these journals will be made available through InterLibrary Loan.
