LIBRARY BULLETINApril 2000 Accessing Full Text Journal from the Library Website
First things first: Due to stringent licensing agreements, in order to obtain full text from many of the library's databases, you must be using one of the computers in the library, or be logged into a network account. Please note that we are working on an authentication method to provide off campus access. Adobe Acrobat must also be installed on the computer to access many of these documents. Providing access to the full text journal articles (books, pamphlets and other publications, too!) has become a valuable service provided by the library. Many of our patrons have become familiar with accessing the full text of journals through Ovid. However, in order to expand and improve our service, we hve mad a change in full text access. Currently, in place of Ovid full text journals, the library is providing access to full text from a number of sources. The best way to determine if a journal is available full text is to click on the button, "Journals List" on the library home page (http://servers.medlib.hscbklyn.edu). The titles in blue are available electronically. Next to the title, will be listed whether the journal is available directly or must be searched for using databases from FirstSearch, IAC, Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe, or the publishers Wiley and Elsevier ScienceDirect. (The latter includes journals published by those companies.) In addition, Dialog@Carl allows access to full text versions of Lancet and Science. Alternately, you can access only electronic full text journals by clicking on the button "Electronic Full Text", then "Full Text Journals", the selecting alphabetically by title. Each database, as well as each publisher has its own search engine. At present there is no common search interface for all of the library's databases. A useful summary of how to search these can be obtained on the library web page by clicking on the button "Electronic Full Text" and then "Electronic Full Text Journals" and finally, "Accessing Electronic Full Text Journals" If the Journals List indicates that the title is available "Direct," access can be obtained by clicking the title name. In this way the patron will be brought directly to the publisher's web site. Access to journals is usually provided on an issue-by-issue basis. You can click on thetable of contents of the desired issue and access the article from there. Some publishers' sites will provide search engines that allow you to search by subject. Wiley and Elsevier ScienceDirect allow access to a collection of journals from each of these publishers. If the desired title is included in either of these databases, you can search a particular journal or search across all the journals in the database by clicking directly to the sites from the Journals List. If the journal title is indicated as being available from IAC or First Search, it will be necessary to do a search to access full text articles. First Search is a collection of databases that includes some full text journal articles. A click from the journal list title will bring you to the main search screen, where appropriate databases must be selected. A search can be done by subject, author, publication date or article title, and limited to a particular journal. IAC includes the database Health Reference Center which must also be searched by keyword, and may be limited by journal title. Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe includes the full text of certain newspaper articles as well as the text of laws including New York State Public Health Law. Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe is particularly useful for current news items, or the most recent laws relating to a topic.
Thank You! The Library recently obtained a new journal, International Tinnitus Journal, from the ARLENE and ABRAHAM SHULMAN OTOLOGICAL EDUCATION CENTER (AAS-OEC). Dr. Abraham Shulman, in recent discussions with the Library, has further committed the AAS-OEC to donate a substantial amount of money annually to update the Library's monograph resources in otology. These resources will initially be in print, but will soon encompass electronic material. The Collection Manager, Mohamed F. Hussain, will work closely with Dr. Abraham Shulman and Dr. Neil Sperling on the selection process. The Library is grateful to all parties concerned for this kind and noble gesture and looks forward to this and to other kinds of collaboration with other campus agencies in satisfying the information needs of the community.
