Library Policy for Using Group Study Rooms

SUNY-Downstate students, faculty, staff or residents may use any of the three group study rooms, located on the second floor of the Library, upon presentation of a valid SUNY-Downstate ID at the Access Services Desk.

The rooms may be booked up to 24 hours in advance for periods of up to two hours per group. The rooms are NOT available for anyone studying alone; there must be at least 2 persons in a room at a time. If a patron is observed using a room alone, they will be asked to leave. If the room was initially booked for a group and after one-half hour a patron is observed studying alone he/she will be asked to leave.

There is a grace period of 15 minutes after the exact time the room was initially booked for the user to collect and sign out the key to a room. After 15 minutes, the reservation will be canceled and the room is available for any other user. Reservations are not transferable.

Before using a room, the room is charged to the patrons and they are given a printout of the transaction, which tells how long the patrons have use of the room. This printout is given to the patrons along with the key to the room. The key must be returned to the Access Services Desk no later than the time indicated on the print-out or one-half hour before closing, whichever occurs first, and the room is discharged from the patron's record.

The rooms are available for bookings during regular library hours, which are posted in several locations in the Library. When the booking period expires, or one-half hour before closing, whichever occurs first, all personal property must be taken out of the rooms, the keys must be returned to the Access Services Desk, and the rooms must be locked. If personal items are inadvertently left in a locked Group Study Room, after regular closing hours, Public Safety will have to be summoned to unlock the door and immediately relock the door after personal property is retrieved.

Group Study Rooms are fully governed by the rules and regulations that apply to usage of the rest of the Library. This includes the prohibition against food consumption and beverages in non-approved containers.
